The best DIY unicorn costume ideas
Have unicorns ever NOT been super popular?? I’m not sure, but I do know they’ve amped up in trendiness these last few years. My daughter Layla wanted unicorn all the things there for awhile and one of the tutorials I wrote here during that time is still one my most popular, so I thought I’d round up the best DIY unicorn costume ideas I could find and put them here in one place!
Rather than making a hugely long post with allll the unicorn costume tutorials and ideas out there, I picked what I feel are the few BEST ones, some to sew and some no-sew. Something for everyone!
And lest you think unicorn costumes are just for kids, let me tell you, a unicorn could make a pretty great costume for women too, just check out that last link at the end of the post to see some mother/daughter unicorn cuteness.
Let’s do this!

When Layla was going through her unicorn phase, I made her a unicorn cape, using the Simplicity pattern, 8483. Funny story, she wanted to be Hermione Granger the following year and I didn’t realize the pattern also has the Harry Potter cape until after I’d bought a different pattern and used that one, ha! You’d think I’d know by now — always check the stash first!
To amp up the unicorn look, you can make some pretty cute accessories, like these furry unicorn legs by Once Upon a Sewing Machine.
For a very easy, no-sew unicorn costume, PA Country Crafts has a tutorial for the easiest DIY unicorn costume ever. Sooooo many costumes can be made using a basic shirt and pants set as a base!
A leotard and tights makes a great costume base also, and a DIY tutu can be used to create many, many different kinds of costumes. Like this Rainbow Unicorn costume idea on the Fabric.com blog.
I posted a tutorial over a year ago for DIY unicorn headbands, complete with pretty felt flowers. There is some hand sewing involved, but it’s not totally necessary — you can make the whole thing with your hot glue gun if you wanted!
And of course, to top it all off, you need Twist Me Pretty’s unicorn makeup tutorial. Wow, what talent this mama has!! Go over and check out her mother and daughter unicorn costumes while you’re learning to do your unicorn makeup, they are too cute. I’ll be honest, makeup is not where my talents lie, but my 14-year-old ballerina daughter is awesome at it, so she could totally do this.
Do you have a unicorn lover at your house? I know it’s getting a little close to Halloween, so absolutely no judgement here if you decide to just buy a costume, ha!
