Halloween Costume Reveal!
We had a photo shoot today of the kids’ costumes for Halloween and I could not be happier with how each one turned out!!! As usual, my girls were way more into the photo shoot than Kelby was, but I did manage one stellar photo of him as Spiderman. Maybe I’ll snag some more on Halloween itself.
The costume I put the most work into this year was Natalie’s! She is a huge Audrey Hepburn fan and had her heart set on dressing up as Eliza Doolittle, in the peach dress she wears when she angrily sings the song “Show Me” to her wanna-be beaux, Freddy.
Here’s a side by side of our inspiration photo and our finished look.
We lucked out and were able to use a fabric that my mom sent to me. A friend of hers had given her a bunch and she sent what she didn’t want to me, and this beautiful satin in just the right color was in there! for the white shirt underneath, I ordered this cotton swiss dot from Amazon and it was perfect.
I used three separate patterns. For the skirt, New Look 6346 was perfect. She loves this skirt and intends to wear it in the future, so I made sure to do a nice job, not just a “costume job”. for the jacket, I looked at a lot of different costume jacket patterns, knowing I would have to alter one to get the right lines. I went with McCalls 6911 because it had the collar and was the cropped length we needed. I redrafted the collar and front pieces to the right shapes and made the tassels with embroidery floss. With a covered button kit, the buttons were very easy to make. We needed a high collared shirt pattern for the white shirt, so I purchased the Indie pattern, The Bloomsbury Blouse, knowing I’ll probably use it again in the future. We excluded the ruffle in the front, but it’s so pretty on her, I hope she’ll let me make her another version with the ruffle for everyday wear!
The hat wasn’t too tricky to put together. We purchased a placemat (I think it’s called a “charger”, actually"), for $2.50 at Target, but it was yellow, so I sponge painted it brown. Then we just used our inspiration photo to choose the right flowers, the blue velvet ribbon and some fake grapes from Hobby Lobby. After that it was just a job for the glue gun. We pinned it on place with bobby pins and she felt it was very secure.
Believe it or not, she already had these shoes, they were a recent thrift store find, and they complete the look perfectly!
This was a FUN project to make, I love her interest in old movies and music, so it’s easy to oblige when she makes these requests.
Layla’s costume didn’t require any sewing from me! She waffles back and forth a TON every year. Her costume plan changes daily for at least a month, but when I suggested an 80’s exerciser, she was sold and never looked back, ha!
Hahahaha, she looks awesome!! And the photo shoot was so fun and hilarious. This costume is completely thrift store friendly, though we did order the leg warmers and sweat bands as a set from Amazon. They were quite a bit cheaper on Amazon than at the party store.
The shorts, leggings, sweatshirt and 80’s Wilson tennis shoes were all thrifted for super cheap. This is a no- sew, easy costume idea, even if you’re short on time!
Kelby’s costume almost stumped me, but I figured it out! He really wanted to be Spiderman, but he didn’t want a tight bodysuit. I ended up buying a sweatshirt and matching sweatpants on Amazon and then using red fleece and other fabric scraps to decorate the sweats into a Spiderman costume. I used black thread and a zig zag stitch for the black spider web lines and they gave the cool effect of bulk/muscles. There are so many costumes you can make with sweats! They sort of make it easy.
Kelby’s very happy with his costume and I like that he will be warm when trick or treating!
That’s it! All my hard work! Lol. Have a fun Halloween everyone!!
Cheers :)
Don’t stress, make a plan!
