New Makes Week!! #4

Can you believe I have more recent makes than weekdays? Ha! Luckily, the last four are made from just one pattern, so I’m going to share all those together tomorrow.

Today, though, I have a pretty great knit dress I made a few weeks ago to share with you. I had seen a dress while shopping on an online boutique that I love to get ideas from, even though I can’t usually afford their stuff. There was a basic black rayon jersey dress with ties built into the side seams to give it shape. I had just bought New Look 6618 at Hobby Lobby and remembered that I had bought a 100% modal jersey full size sheet at my thrift store before they shut down.

New Look Pattern 6618, a knit jersey dress that can be tied in the front or the back. I’m sharing all my recent sewn garments on the Pin Cut Sew blog this week, so hop over and check out the others! #sewing #dress #littleblackdress #sewingpattern

I was NOT expecting this make to turn out very well! Haha! I thought, “How can something so floaty and shapeless become something flattering?” Somehow, though, the ties make it so! This dress can be tied in the front or the back and I like it both ways.

Sadly, my modal sheet fabric is on the thin side, so I’ll need to wear a full slip with it. I know i’ll wear the slip somewhat often, but it’s not something I’m interested in making, so I’m going to order this one. Even so, I think I’ll be on the lookout for a better rayon jersey to remake this dress with. I’m moving a humid state pretty soon and I know from the last humid state I lived in, I will not want to wear layers if I can avoid it.

My beef with this pattern is that it calls for store bought bias tape to finish the neckline and armholes. Anyone who has sewn with knits knows that will not work. You cannot sew a woven fabric to a knit fabric without a lot of frustration! I made a neck band instead and for the arm holes, I simply serged, turned under and hemmed.

See ya tomorrow with four garments sewn with one very simple pattern!

Cheers :)
